Meet your Business Energy Champions

Bainbridge Athletic Club

Owner: Ted Eisenhardt

When lights are on for more than 15 hours per day, the electric bill really adds up. To save energy and reduce costs, Bainbridge Athletic Club chose to upgrade the lighting system on its indoor tennis courts with more energy-efficient fixtures and occupancy controls.

"What a difference the new lighting has made on our energy bills," said owner Ted Eisenhardt. "And using less energy is a meaningful way for the club to go green."

Overall, the lighting retrofit was an excellent business investment with a simple payback time of approximately four years. Puget Sound Energy's (PSE) Energy Efficiency Grant covered half the initial project cost.

Kids Discovery Museum (KiDiMu)

Executive Director:  Susan Sivitz

When the Bainbridge Island Kids Discovery Museum decided to build a new environmentally conscious facility, they didn't forget about energy efficiency. The KiDiMu and its consultant contacted PSE early in the design phase so the commissioning process could make a positive impact on the facility.

Recently opened, the new KiDiMu space is larger, has a lot more play areas and a real electric car. "Our new building gives us the opportunity to help educate children and their caregivers about the importance of energy efficiency. Features such as our living roof and electric car exhibit allow us to make learning fun! As a non-profit organization, the long-term cost savings and the PSE grants we received are very important factors in our successful operation," said executive director Susan Sivitz.

The KiDiMu project included the services of a third-party commissioning agent who provided energy-efficiency recommendations during the design phase. The building earned a LEED Silver level certification from the United States Green Building Council. PSE funded the energy-efficiency commissioning of the major energy systems including HVAC, hot water and lighting.
